CAPITAL PROJECTS

The Tolley Building / Humanities

When Chancellor Nancy Cantor came to Syracuse in 2004, one of her first acts was to make a gift of the historic Tolley Administration Building to The College of Arts and Sciences. After an extensive two-year renovation, the building re-opened in 2007 as site of the University’s new Center for the Public and Collaborative Humanities and as home to Imagining America, a national consortium whose mission is to strengthen the public role and democratic purposes of the humanities, arts, and design. The building now serves as a hub, connecting a diverse array of initiatives. They include the Central New York Humanities Corridor, a large-scale partnership with Cornell University and the University of Rochester; a new humanities postdoctoral program; and collaborative efforts in religion, media, and international relations. These projects and others, supported by such prestigious funding agencies as the Mellon, Ford, and Luce foundations, are evidence of SU’s renewed commitment to the study of the humanities, public life, and positive social change.

Behavioral Sciences

After the life sciences and humanities, The College has identified psychology—and the behavioral sciences, in general—as its next capital priority. The Department of Psychology strives to advance the scientific understanding of human behavior through research, teaching, and community engagement. Our faculty members are recognized scholars and mentors with expertise in four primary areas: causes and consequences of social problems, cognition and aging, health and behavior, and the psychology of children in home and school. Our undergraduate major, one of the largest at SU, actively engages students in research, teaching, and community internships through the Allport Project. We also offer nationally ranked graduate training in clinical, experimental, school, and social psychology. As SU’s most federally funded academic department, psychology houses the Center for Health and Behavior, which collaborates with area schools, laboratories, hospitals, and agencies in cutting-edge research and education. Excellence in Student Writing

Writing skills are integral to an engaged and successful undergraduate intellectual experience. If students can substantially develop their potential as academic writers in a variety of disciplines, they will have mastered skills that will one day prove invaluable in their professional and civic lives. For the University to have a substantial impact on academic writing, The College proposes establishing a campus-wide Institute for Excellence in Student Writing. When fully funded, the institute will hire a director and two staff-level assistant directors, as well as up to 20 postdoctoral fellows; expand the staff of the existing Writing Center; develop a Peer Consultant Program; implement a visiting professorship program; and launch a variety of forms of recognition for high-quality student writing in courses across campus.  Also, The College has launched First Year Seminars, an in-depth academic writing experience taught by our first postdoctoral fellows in the humanities, fulfilling the first-semester writing requirement of the Liberal Arts Core.
