Muslim Program Launches in London

We are proud to partner with SU Abroad (SUA) in a new interdisciplinary program, Muslim Cultures: Historical Diversity and Contemporary Realities, to be offered in Fall 2007 at Faraday House, SUA’s center in the historic Bloomsbury district of London. In addition to coursework, undergraduates will visit Sunni, Shi’a, and Sufi organizations; mosques; cultural festivals; and London museums and art galleries, which house a rich array of art from the Islamic world.

The program’s director is Professor
Tazim R. Kassam. “This distinctive program is situated in London because of the incredible diversity of Muslims from different racial, cultural, and political backgrounds,” she says. “Students will discover, firsthand, how much pluralism there is in Islam, and gain greater appreciation of the global currents in religion, politics, and society.”

For more information, contact the SUA office on campus at 800-235-3472 or visit suabroad.syr.edu. Credit from the program will apply toward the interdisciplinary minor in Muslim cultures that The College is launching this fall.
