New Transfer Student Checklist

Welcome to The College of Arts and Sciences (A&S)!  We realize that, as a transfer student, you are coming to us with diverse experiences and academic backgrounds. In response, we are committed to addressing your unique needs, and have created this checklist to prepare for your transition to SU and A&S.  By now you’ve realized that you have a lot do before arriving to Syracuse University in August.  One of the most important things you will be doing this summer is selecting the courses that you would be interested in taking during your first semester of college.  To get started:

Go online and activate your Net ID so that you’re able to check your Syracuse University email, which we will use to contact you throughout the summer.
Review and begin to understand the Liberal Arts Core (page 2 of the Core Guidebook).

Go online and take the Math, Spanish or French placement exam.

  • Placement exams in other languages are not offered online; they are only offered when you arrive (see link above for more information).
  • If you are an international student whose native language is not English, then you must take the “English to Speakers of Other Languages” assessment exam offered when you arrive in August.

Are you a Pre-Health student?

  • Health professions schools strongly advise against applicants completing their prerequisite science courses through AP, summer, or community college credit.  Therefore, Pre-Health students should not keep AP biology, chemistry, or physics credit.  Note: SUPA or other college credit taken during high school for college credit is acceptable.
  • Unless your math skills (particularly in precalculus and/or calculus), are very strong, you should not keep math AP credit.

Are you in the Renée Crown University Honor’s Program?

  • Students admitted to the Honors Program will receive special registration instructions in the mail that supplement those from their school or college.  Please wait to receive these instructions before making your course selections in iPlan.

Are you thinking about a particular major within A&S?

  • For more detailed description of all majors/minors at SU and their requirements, see the Online Course Catalog.

Before you begin choosing courses, please follow the steps below to make your course selection process much smoother.

Review your Transfer Credit Evaluation, Degree Checksheet, and Transfer Credit Information Sheet which you have already received from your College Recorder.  To help you understand the Degree Checksheet, see the Liberal Arts Core.

Read over the Scheduling Instructions for information regarding how to select your Fall 2009 courses.

Review the Fall 2009 Schedule of Classes and Undergraduate Course Catalog for useful information regarding course selection and descriptions, respectively.

Make a list of courses that you hope to take and complete the Student Advising and Registration Course Worksheet.

  • Make sure you’ve accurately included the five digit Class # on the Student Advising and Registration Course Worksheet for each of the courses for which you are attempting to register.
  • Make sure you have registered for all components of a particular course as required, i.e. lectures, recitations, discussions and labs.
  • You must select alternative courses in case your first choices are not available. Alternative courses should be different from your first-choice selections; do not merely choose different sections of the same courses.
  • Make sure that you have not selected a course for which you have been awarded or intend to receive transfer or AP credit.
  • If you wish to select courses toward your intended major or minor—or have questions about how your transfer credit would apply to that particular major or minor—then please contact the academic department directly for further information.
