Graduate Programs in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Biology (M.S. and Ph.D.)
The Department of Biology is committed to graduate training of the highest quality. Its programs are sufficiently flexible to permit training in diverse research areas and to allow for the natural evolution of new specializations or unusual combinations of areas of interest. Graduate programs leading to either the M.S. or Ph.D. degree are offered in a wide variety of disciplines within the areas of biochemistry, genetics, molecular and cell biology, and population biology.

Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics SB3 (Ph.D.)

Chemistry (M.S. and Ph.D.)
Graduate students pursue research in a broad range of disciplines: analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, as well as biophysical, biochemical, bioorganic chemistry, and biophysics. Spectroscopy, computer analysis, and advanced structural and functional evaluation of biological materials are some areas available for concentration. Graduate students receive hands-on training in the use of state-of-the-art chemical instrumentation, and then use all equipment directly in their research.

Communication Sciences and Disorders (M.S. and Ph.D.)
The master's degree programs in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology are designed to provide the student with sufficient depth and breadth of academic study and clinical practicum for a professional career in the diagnosis and management of individuals with speech, language and hearing disorders. Students completing the programs will have met the course and practicum requirements set by ASHA for the Certificate of Clinical Competence and for New York State licensure. Presently, 97% of students who enter the graduate program successfully meet criteria for graduation.

Earth Science / Geology (M.S. and Ph.D.)
The Department of Earth Sciences at Syracuse is a community of scholars with diverse interests in the nature of our planet: environmental geology, wetland hydrogeology, crustal evolution, sedimentology, isotope geochemistry, paleobiology, paleolimnology, and global environmental change. Faculty in our Department are all established research scientists, but you will find them equally dedicated to teaching and mentoring. We pride ourselves on being approachable - more than willing to try to answer your questions, give advice, or discuss program planning or career goals.

Mathematics (M.S. and Ph.D.)
Six graduate degrees are offered by the department, four at the Masters level and two at the Ph. D. level. They are: (1) Masters of Science in Applied Statistics, (2) Masters Double Degree--Mathematics & Computer Science, (3) Masters Degree in Mathematics Education, (4) Masters of Science in Mathematics, (5) Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, (6) Ph.D. in Mathematics

Physics (M.S. and Ph.D.)
The graduate program in Physics at Syracuse University is designed to provide a stimulating environment for students to work closely with distinguished faculty members on leading-edge research projects. Graduate student progress is carefully monitored. We realize that many students will go on to careers outside of academics and every effort is made to educate students about the wide variety of career paths available to physicists with advanced degrees. Our graduate alumni work all over the world in academic and industrial positions of all kinds.

Psychology (Ph.D.)
Psychology's pedagogical approach complements the University's student centered mission. Each of the Department's four doctoral programs embraces the junior colleague model, wherein graduate and undergraduate students work alongside faculty on active research projects. This approach works well; thus, Psychology is expected to remain in great demand among undergraduates, and to serve as a model to other disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences and beyond. The Ph.D. Program in Psychology are offered in these specializations: Clinical Psychology, Experimental Psychology, School Psychology and Social Psychology. Psychology's four doctoral programs account for about one fifth of 300 doctoral students currently enrolled in Arts and Sciences Ph.D. programs.

Science Teaching (M.S. and Ph.D.)
The graduate programs in the Department of Science Teaching focus on basic theories, research, and practices that advance the knowledge of science education through specialized preparation. The programs draw on the multiple resources of the University to prepare leaders in science education-ranging from the classroom teacher to the research specialist.
